Sustainable Urban Design: Eco Cities

Ecological cities or eco-cities use integrated urban planning and management that is in harmony with ecological systems which protect and nurture the systems for future generations to enjoy.  Many cities in the United States are not doing enough to become eco-cities and that a radical paradigm shift is needed. Perhaps the best way to get direction and momentum is to look in outstanding examples/best practices of eco-cities throughout the world, across four continents, in both developed and developing countries.  The course will emphasize the eco-cities are also vibrant economic cities.  Some topics to be covered include common urban spatial structures, bus rapid transit, demand side management and floor area ratio.


Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss Eco-Cities from a primarily city level vs. regional or national level.
  • Understand how existing institutional framework keep problems unresolved and that restructuring the framework is needed for change.
  • Understand how using one-system is important to integrating planning, designing and management of a city
  • Discuss  life-cycle analysis of Eco Cities

Understanding LEED: Sustainable Sites (SS)

This course is an introduction to LEED's Sustainable Sites category.  Focusing on LEED version 3.0, this is a great introductory course for those just becoming familiar with the LEED rating system as well as the perfect refresher course for LEED Accredited Professionals who have not yet worked with version 3.0.

  • Become familiar with the structure of credits amongst the Sustainable Sites category as well as the basic intent of all prerequisites and credits.
  • Review in depth the requirements and terminology of each prerequisite and credit in the Sustainable Sites Category; discussing topics such as remediation, low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, greenfield sites, pervious versus impervious materials and cutoff lighting fixtures.
  • Discuss strategies to achieve prerequisites and credits in the Sustainable Sites section, including erosion control strategies, development density calculation methods, shading strategies, types of bioswales and other stormwater management strategies, roofing materials with the best SRI values, and types of vegetated roofs and heat island mitigation strategies. 
  • Understand the entire Sustainable Sites category, be able to educate consultants and owners on this category, be able to develop strategies for achieving prerequisites and credits and successfully implement those strategies
